Congratulations again on your new baby and thank you for choosing me to photograph your new little ones first few days of life. After years of experience photographing newborns at all stages, I have been able to pick up on some patterns that are helpful for a smooth session. Granted, not any 2 babies are the same, however here are some tips that have been helpful:

Tip #1 - Timing is everything!
Newborn sessions are best between the first 5-14 days of life for those squishy, sleepy poses. This makes posing easier and "safer". After approximately 2 weeks of life, a baby's relaxing hormone levels drop making their limbs stiffer and more difficult to pose. They are also less sleepy after that 2-week mark. If baby was born premature, then time-factor is irrelevant; session is best when baby's weight reaches at least 6lbs.
Although I do photograph older newborns up to 4 weeks old, it is important to note that baby will likely will likely be awake more during session/photos and swaddled poses may work best.
Tip #2 - Getting baby ready
Dress baby in a button/zip up outfit, just ideally nothing that goes over baby’s head so if they’re sleeping when you arrive, we don’t disturb them too much while undressing. For at least 1 hour prior to the session, try and have some ‘awake’ time at home if possible; quick bath, let them kick with only a diaper on, tickle their toes, even letting them fuss for a little bit, since they will likely fall asleep during the car ride to the studio.
Tip #3 - A full belly goes a long way
If possible, it is best if baby has a full belly before you arrive, or even plan on topping baby off when you arrive at the studio before getting started. "Milk Drunk" babies tend to get sleepy and settle in much quicker. We will pause as needed to burp and soothe the baby since gassy babies have a harder time settling. If nursing, it may help to minimize your caffeine intake for 24 hours prior to your session.
Tip #4 - What to bring
The toughest part for the little ones is the outfit changes, which is why I've structured my session flow to minimize the number of changes. I have a collection of swaddle wraps, headbands and accessories to choose from, so you do not need to bring any outfits unless there is something you absolutely want to incorporate. Although we have a hairbrush in-studio, feel free to bring your own hairbrush for baby.
Tip #5 - Don't forget a pacifier!
Having something to soothe the baby is key when posing, so it extremely helpful to have a nuk/pacifier handy (preferably the soothie pacifier the hospital provided, they won’t leave marks). Even if you haven’t used one yet or baby doesn’t seem to take to it, just for the few hours that I’m posing baby it can really make a big difference.
Tip #6- Siblings under 5 years old
If you booked the package that includes Sibling Photos, it may be helpful to plan on having a guardian bring sibling(s) towards the end of the session for the sibling photos, if this is possible. Newborn sessions are long (appx 3+ hours) and little ones tend to get restless and impatient. It is also important to have as little noise or disturbances as possible for the baby which can be challenging with toddlers.
However, we understand than not everyone may have this flexibility so if you plan to keep the kiddos around for the entire session, it may be helpful to bring their favorite toys, books or gadget to keep them content. Snacks also go a loooong way in keeping them content and cooperative for sibling posing :)
Tip #7- Family Photos
If you booked the package that includes Family Photos, solid tops work best. Ideally neutral and soft colors (ex: beige, ivory, sage green, etc.) for a more "timeless" look. Also, since your hands will make their way into the photos you may want to prep you nails - nothing fancy, just not chipped polish ideally :) Please know that I aim to photograph using flattering angles (we know you just delivered) and light to create beautiful images you will cherish.
Tip #8 - Make your photos unique!
If parents have any specialized professions, please let me know in advance, and feel free to bring along any items we may be able to incorporate. Things like uniforms, hats, sports helmets, etc. make great props and will make your session unique and fun!
In summary, little one will inevitably get hungry, have a dirty diaper, or need a break... and that’s okay! Center the session on baby's needs and comfort, and the result will be a comfortable baby taking beautiful photos to be cherished forever. Hope you found these tips helpful. Look forward with working with your family to capture this moment that will be treasured for generations to come!
