After years of experience photographing expectant moms at all stages, I have been able to pick up on some patterns that are helpful for a smooth session.
Tip #1 - Timing is everything!
It is best to schedule your session between 28 - 34 weeks as your tummy should have popped and have a beautiful shape. By booking your maternity session during this time you are also can also avoid the discomfort that may come later in the pregnancy and be more comfortable for different poses.
Tip #2 - What to wear
Although I do have several draping fabrics in the studio for use, clients are responsible for providing their own outfits/gowns. Take the time to pick the right outfit for the maternity shoot. You should of course be comfortable but make sure that your clothing doesn’t detract from your tummy’s shape and your natural glow. Avoid large, bold patterns or clothing that is too loose. Accessories like hats, jewelry, etc. can transform your photo into a piece of art, so don't be afraid to bring it along.
Tip #3 - Open to boudoir shots? Let me know!
Although I love to capture the natural beauty of the pregnant female body, I understand not all women may feel comfortable or may not want that look. However, if you do, please plan on bringing neutral undergarments.... you could also bring any lace or lingerie pieces you may have.
Tip #4 - Look your best, Feel your best
Even if you don't typically wear makeup, I highly recommend it for a photoshoot. Not only will it make you feel beautiful and confident, but it will enhance your photos. Generally, professional makeup is a bit heavier and colorful than your day-to-day makeup and that’s OK! Whether your photo session takes place in natural light or studio lights, your make-up will look very flattering. However, if it’s not in the budget, your going-out-on-a-hot-date makeup and hair is fine too! Natural looking fake lashes can really flatter your eyes and a little blush goes a long way!
Tip #5 - Prep your hands & feet
Your hands and feet will likely make their way into the photos, especially those beautiful shots with your hands on your tummy. While there's no need for a professional mani/pedi, a fresh coat of neutral polish will look great. Ideally no chipped nails.
Hope you found these tips helpful. Look forward with working with your family to capture this moment that will be treasured for generations to come!
